Portfolio - Theories of Architecture and Urbanism [ARC2224]
SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE. BUILDING. DESIGN
Modern Architecture Studies in Southern Asia (MASSA) Research Unit
Bachelor of Science (Honours) (Architecture)
Synopsis
This synopsis attempts to interpret architecture according to established architectural theory and conditions within which architecture is done. In a group of 4/5 students, students are to present a synopsis of the given reading during the seminar sessions. It is intended to provide each student with the opportunity to share their knowledge with the class, and to help promote student discussions.
LEARNING OUTCOMES :
1. Describe the theoretical issues related to design through study of architecture and urbanism and its related studies
2. Relate architectural theories to contemporary architecture and urban forms

Synopsis 2 Towards a New Architecture -Le Corbusier
Synopsis 3 Learning from Las Vegas - Robert Venturi
Synopsis 4 Towards a Radical Eclecticism -Charles Jencks
Project 2 Part I: Analysing Self
This project asks us to select a defined area of your hometown and see it “through the eyes” of one architect, urban designer or theoretician that was discussed in the lecture series. We are asked to apply or translate design theories and historic urban design approaches onto this area. Imagine how the architect or urban designer may have analysed and interpreted in this chosen area. So, I had chosen Kuala Lumpur and the theory is Complexity and Contradiction by Robert Venturi.
Project 2 Part II: ANALYZING AND THEORIZING ARCHITECTURE
This project attempts to convey an understanding of architect‟s architectural theory through a direct observation and analysis of his/her buildings. Using architecture as primary text, this project claims that the world of form is not arbitrary but displays an internal logic that has the capacity to convey meaning. Analytical illustrations are used extensively to reveal the conceptual and experiential order of the architecture. It will support students‟ learning since doing architecture can be developed by studying the work of others.
Portfolio - Architecture Conservation [ARC 60703]
SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE. BUILDING. DESIGN
Modern Architecture Studies in Southern Asia (MASSA) Research Unit
Bachelor of Science (Honours) (Architecture)
Project 1: PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION OF HERITAGE BUILDING
In this project, students are required to study and produce a Preliminary Investigation report for a Heritage Building. The report comprises of information on the owner, historical and social background, and objective for conservation, financial Implication and implementation agency. The report is to be accompanied with a set of measured drawings. This project will expose students to first stage of building conservation framework.
Architecture Investigation – is the critical first step in planning an appropriate treatment for buidling conservation. It involves historical research and documentation
Learning Outcomes:
1. Identify the history and theories of architectural conservation practices
2. Recall framework of Heritage Building Conservation

Project 2: Dilapitation Survey Report
In this project, student will require to propose for the defect problems for building conservation. It will require students to investigate and observe practices and approaches on architecture conservation in Malaysia. Students are to organize trips to several sites in order to explore, comprehend and form opinion which subsequently captured in a proposal statement and illustrated diagrams.
Learning Outcomes:
1. To gain exposure to a wide and diverse range of practice and debate in the field
2. Identify the defects of the building consercation
In this project, student will require to propose for potential new usage for building conservation.
2. To develop understanding and appreciation through the undertaking of case studies of buildings and sites in Malaysia , and , beyond, about the importance of historical and heritage buildings
