Project 1: Experiencing Construction: Experiencing, Documentation and Analysis Construction
Process
This is my first project in this subject. This project is a group project of eight persons. The tasks that we had to do for this project are to select one or two on-going construction site to visit and then write out a report of it. From the site, we have to identify different types of building elements and its construction process, details and materials. Through a several times of discussions with my group mates, we had decided to get a visit to De' bunga Residence in Ukay Perdana. This residence consists of 3 strata landed housing scheme build 68 units of 3-storey semi-detached houses, 14 units of 3-storey house, 1 unit of electrical substations and 1 unit of guardhouse. The following are the pictures of this residence which is in a construction process.
During the tutorial lesson with our tutor, Mr Bruce Lee, we dicussed about some problems that we met during our site visit such as the specific names of the plants and machinery, what are the materials used for and ect. In order to understand more, we decided to go for another site visit. The constrcution site is a condominium in Bukit Mada'rina. Below are the pictures of the construction process of the condominium.
Our site visits came to the end! Now, we have to do our report. Since this report covered a lot of chapters that we have to include, so we divided the chapters among our group members. For me, I chose to do setting out and earth work and door. Honestly, I was quite blur about these chapters as this is my first time to get with this subject and I totally have no knowledge about it. Luckily, the ideas and different point of views throughout the discussions with my bunch of group mates may lead me to further cope up with the ideas on how to do. The below link is our final report.
Throughout the process of this project, it made me really understand what are the construction elements and its components that can find in a construction site and also the current materials and technology in relevance to present construction industry. The whole process is quite difficult and sometimes felt very tired of doing it. And yet, I didn't grouse about the heavy work load as I know it's part of the journey and a way of learning process in my university life.
Project 2: Integrated Construction Detailing/ Drawing
This is the final project of this subject which is an individual work. This project has a connection with our design studio project which is Pantai Kerachut Retreat House. We had to do the construction detailing part of the retreat house that we designed. So, in this project, we had to identify and propose three architectural detailings for our design in our studio project. For me, I chose to do the roof, superstructure (staircase) and foundation. For foundation, I used pad foundation for my building as pad foundation is good enough to be used in area with weak and unstable soil condition since Pantai Kerachut is a remote sandy beach, For staircase, I chose to use straight staircase with open tread. For roof, I used shed roof in my design as it considered to be the most manageable form of shed roof construction. The below is my completed presentation board.
In this final project, I did learnt a lot of things. I understand the structural elements in construction and its application in the construction industry. It allows me to demonstrate my understanding and knowledge of construction, material and technology in my studio design. I also understand how the building materials selection can affect the aesthetic and structural values of their design. Lastly, I want to thanks my tutor, Architect Chin, who helped me a lot in this project and guided me step by step on how to improve my presentation board and also whenever I met any difficulties and problems in doing my project or the understanding of the lectures.
