Project 1: Green- Go 2013 International Short Film Contest

As we all know, now a day, environmental issues have become a great concern for mankind at present time becaise these issues are affecting the earth and us badly. So, this project intends to encourage us to do our part by producing a short film that reflects these concerns and to part if the change for a better world and be on the big screen with our creative thoughts. This contest consists of three catogories, which are 'Life in plastic, it's fantastic?', 'Water - the drop of life', 'Stayin' alive'. From these three categories, we have to choose one and make out either a campaign film or a short film. For me, I chose to do 'Stayin' alive' in a campaign film. The following is the video.

The reason why I chose this categories is because I find that now a days the problem of extinction of animals is getting serious and serious. Animals are the second friends of humans. So, we have to give a great awareness of the extinct animals. Not only animals, we also have to increase our awareness of current environment issues locally and globally. As a human being, we have to play our role and responsibilities toward our environment and society.

Project 2: Appreciating Environment - NOTHING IS CONSIDERED WASTE

This project is divided into two parts which are group work and individual work. Now a day, construction waste can be considered as one of the main factor that can gives serious impact to our environment. So, this project required us to go to a site visit. From the site, we have to know what are the wasted materials and how and why are they wasted. Besides, we also have to collect the wasted materials to use them to produce and exhibit beautiful object.

In my group, we went for two sites. The first one is Glenmarie Cove in Klang, the second one is UJS 3A in Subang Jaya. From these two sites, the main wasted materials that we had collected were wooden plank, PVC pipe, aluminium panel, floor tile, brick, polyethylene, autoclaved aerated concrete, rebar ect. Throughout the several times of discussion with my group mates, finally, we had finished our presentation board.

In second part of this subject which is an individual work, I had chosen the wasted aluminium panel to make out a lamp stand. I arranged the aluminium panel in a circular layers form and fixed them together with wires by penetrating the wires through the panel. The gaps between the panels allow the light to penetrate out. The following pictures are my DIY lamp stand from wasted aluminium panels.

Throughout the project, I did learnt a lot of things. It made me understand the impact of non-using or non-recycling construction waste to our environment. Besides, it allowed me to demonstrate my understanding and knowledge of materials life cycle and recycling creatively. Lastly, I really realised that team work and communication are very important. I really want to thank to my group mates and my tutor, Mr Sanjay, I appreciate a lot during the process of completing this project.

Project 1: Experiencing Construction: Experiencing, Documentation and Analysis Construction
                Process

This is my first project in this subject. This project is a group project of eight persons. The tasks that we had to do for this project are to select one or two on-going construction site to visit and then write out a report of it. From the site, we have to identify different types of building elements and its construction process, details and materials. Through a several times of discussions with my group mates, we had decided to get a visit to De' bunga Residence in Ukay Perdana. This residence consists of 3 strata landed housing scheme build 68 units of 3-storey semi-detached houses, 14 units of 3-storey house, 1 unit of electrical substations and 1 unit of guardhouse. The following are the pictures of this residence which is in a construction process.

During the tutorial lesson with our tutor, Mr Bruce Lee, we dicussed about some problems that we met during our site visit such as the specific names of the plants and machinery, what are the materials used for and ect. In order to understand more, we decided to go for another site visit. The constrcution site is a condominium in Bukit Mada'rina. Below are the pictures of the construction process of the condominium.

Our site visits came to the end! Now, we have to do our report. Since this report covered a lot of chapters that we have to include, so we divided the chapters among our group members. For me, I chose to do setting out and earth work and door. Honestly, I was quite blur about these chapters as this is my first time to get with this subject and I totally have no knowledge about it. Luckily, the ideas and different point of views throughout the discussions with my bunch of group mates may lead me to further cope up with the ideas on how to do. The below link is our final report.

Throughout the process of this project, it made me really understand what are the construction elements and its components that can find in a construction site and also the current materials and technology in relevance to present construction industry. The whole process is quite difficult and sometimes felt very tired of doing it. And yet, I didn't grouse about the heavy work load as I know it's part of the journey and a way of learning process in my university life.

Project 2: Integrated Construction Detailing/ Drawing

This is the final project of this subject which is an individual work. This project has a connection with our design studio project which is Pantai Kerachut Retreat House. We had to do the construction detailing part of the retreat house that we designed. So, in this project, we had to identify and propose three architectural detailings for our design in our studio project. For me, I chose to do the roof, superstructure (staircase) and foundation. For foundation, I used pad foundation for my building as pad foundation is good enough to be used in area with weak and unstable soil condition since Pantai Kerachut is a remote sandy beach, For staircase, I chose to use straight staircase with open tread. For roof, I used shed roof in my design as it considered to be the most manageable form of shed roof construction. The below is my completed presentation board.

In this final project, I did learnt a lot of things. I understand the structural elements in construction and its application in the construction industry. It allows me to demonstrate my understanding and knowledge of construction, material and technology in my studio design. I also understand how the building materials selection can affect the aesthetic and structural values of their design. Lastly, I want to thanks my tutor, Architect Chin, who helped me a lot in this project and guided me step by step on how to improve my presentation board and also whenever I met any difficulties and problems in doing my project or the understanding of the lectures.

Project: Architecture Heritage Building Analysis

In this semester, this is the only subject that we had in this subject. However, this project needs a deep research for a building which is not that easy for us. This project is a group project of four peoples and also consist an individual work. This project attempts to document Klang through report and analysis as Klang is the oldest town in Selangor. From this, we were required to select a building in Klang and study  the function of the building type to serve the community within its vicinity. Through several times of discussions with my group mates, we had chosen Church Of Our Lady Lourdes as our building analysis.

Facade of the Church Of Our Lady Lourdes

My group mates and me went several times of visit to this church. This church is a Catholic church. It is currently one of the oldest religious buildings in Klang. From that, we were able to identify the different elements from the exterior and interior of this church to best serve the practical and functional needs of the local community. We also found that the façade of this church is quite similar to Notre Dame de Paris. In addition of that, we also know how has the local technology, materials, climatic conditions, history, culture and beliefs influenced the design of this building. In stead of visiting to this church and get information from Internet, we also went to Badan Warisan to look for some reference books about this church which I think they helped us a lot in our report. The following is the link of our report of Church Of Our Lady Lourdes.

In the first part of this assignment which is a report writing, I did learnt a lot of basic knowledge if this church such as how this building came, why and how it built, function and purpose of the building and etc. Besides, it lets me understand the basic architectural theory through a consideration of intentions, concepts, construction, materials, function, architectural language and contextual relationships.

Convent School (a school in the right side of the church)

Here comes for our individual work which is to do a presentation board. In a group of four, we had to choose one of the topic from the response, user and context, concept and change upon this church was built. For me, I had chosen to do the response of the surrounding and design to this church. The following pictures is my presentation board.

Throughout the process of this project, I really realize that team work and communication are very important!! I really want to thanks to my group mates and I appreciate a lot during the process of completing this project. It might found it hard to do at the beginning and yt, after discussing with my group mates, I was able to understand well. Lastly, I want to thanks to my tutor, Ms Anida, who helps us a lot and guide us step by step to improve our project. The following pictures are our verbal presentation to our tutor, Ms Anida.

Project 1: Diagrammatic Abstraction

This is my first project in semester 2 which is a group work of 5 peoples. This assignment required us to choose an architect and study his or her work. From his work we have to investigate and to explore how spaces are created from the architectural compositions of solids, planes, lines and frames. The architect that we have chosen is Kisho Kurokawa and the building that we worked on it is Maggie's Centre.

Kisho Kurokawa

Maggie's Centre

This project is divided into three small parts. The first part is to do a five minutes video of the introduction of Kisho Kurokawa. In this video, we talked about the biography of Kisho Kurokawa and also some of his famous projects like Capsule Tower in Japan and Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Below is the video that is done by us.

In second part, we have to do a series of drawing of Maggie's Centre from Kisho Kurokawa. The drawing includes plans, elevations, sections and site plan.

For the last part, we are asked to do five models of 6x6x6 cm. These five models should be precise and informative to express the analysis of the ideas hidden in this building. In the beginning, our tutor asked us to do 15 models of it. After we had shown our finished models, we received some comments from our tutor and some classmates saying that our models are too direct and not abstract enough. So, we worked hard on it and finally we came out with our five final model.

Throughout the process of this assignment, I really realised that team work and communication are very important. I really want to thanks to my group mates and I appreciate a lot during the process of completing this assignment. Besides, I also learnt how to introduce visual thinking through diagramming and to introduce the basic principles of form, space and in order in architectural design.

Project 2a: Bay Watch

This project is also a group project of two persons. Before this project, we went to a site visit to Pantai Kerachut in Penang. The purpose that we went fot this visit is to do an analysis for the site and required to build a tower in it as our next project. Besides Pantai Kerachut, we also visited the Botanical Garden. We were asked to take some pictures and from the pictures, we had to choose four pictures that inspired us. For me, I chosen the following pictures.

Repetiiton of tree branches

Unit to Whole (stones to form a structure)

 Hierarchy

 Space and Void

In this project, we habe to build a tower within a volume of 3x3x3m. This tower has to be designed to a character with the purpose of using it. Through a series of dicussion with my team mate and tutor, Mr Caleb, finally we had decided to design a viewing deck and chose photographer as our character. At the beginning, we had made five working models. These five models shared the same meaning which was to provide different views, different angles and a variation of height for the photographer to take a good pictures on the lake. The folliwing are the pictures of our models.

In the end, we chose the second picture from the above as the initial design. From that, we came out our final design of it. This tower is built on the lake. The whole concept of this design is to provide a variation of view, angles and height for the photographer to take a nice photo. In order to capture a good angle and view, this tower provides five prone position tripods for the photographer to take pictures in a prone position. Besides, this tower also gives the photographer a good view in capturing the sunrise and sunset at the top of the tower. The material used in this tower is timber as timber is a natural material. So it makes the tower more adapt to the nature environment. Glass also used as glass allows more penetration of light to illuminate the interior of the tower.

Our final model!!

Through this project, I did learnt a lot of things. I had learnt how to explore an user specific requirement into a spatial planning and also how the site that we chosen correspond to our building which I think these will help me a lot in my others coming assignment. Besides, I had learnt the importance of the surrounding of a site will affect a building in term of its weather, soil condition and the users and also the awareness of site specific design and the process of the site analysis.

Project 2b - Pantai Kerachut Retreat

Time flies so quickly! My last and final studio project is here. This is an individual project which causes 60% of our total mark. When I knew this, I told myself that I had to work very hard and put a lot of effort in it. This project is quite similar to the previous project which is also required us to design and build a retreat house up to a space of 150 square meter for a forest ranger in Pantai Kerachut. In the beginning, we are asked to find two case study and learnt from them by doing some sketches of them. I had chosen Miner's Refuge (weekend retreat house) by Johnson Architect and Toc House by Elias Rizo Arquitectoz. From these two case studies, I had learnt that how the spaces in it are arranged and worked through drawing their plans and also how the materials used in it correspond to the surrounding. After that, from what I had learnt from these two case studies, I modified out my own spaces by drawing it out some bubble diagrams and plans.

Toc House

 Miner's Refuge

After a series of discussions with my tutor, he suggested me to do a massing model and play around with it. From that, I had learnt that actually the spaces in a house not need to be look so compact together. We can make some separation to the spaces which will make the building looks more unique. From these, I made out my first working model.

After receiving the comments from my tutor, I knew that I still need a lot of improvement in it. Honestly, I was very blur about this as I couldn't get actually what my tutor wants and I was stuck in my design . Luckily the ideas and different point of views throughout the discussions with my bunch friends may lead me to further cope up with the ideas on how to do. So again, I made out another model which I think is more better than the first one.

After showing this to my tutor, he gave some suggestion and taught me how can I make it better. Then, I worked on it. Finally, I made out my final model which I felt very satisfied with it. The idea of this retreat house is came from life force of the environment. The spaces in this house is build for the ranger to use and experience the feeling of vitality by walking to a narrow space to a big opening space. Glass are largely used in it as glass allows the penetration of light in it as light fills in the space can give different impressions for the forest ranger. It can make the space seem pleasant or unpleasant, moving or ambiguous.

Throughout the process of this project, I did learnt a lot of things. It made me understand the importance of studies of case studies and reference books which help a lot in our design. I also realized that tutorial classes ware also very helpful for me which it enabled me to familiar with each topic that taught during the lessons. I was very appreciate to all my tutors, Mr Hong, Mr Caleb and Mr Edward. They gave a good tutorial to me every time. They was so hepful and guided me a lot whenever I met any difficulties and problems in doing my assignment or the understanding of the lectures. In addition of that, I might found it was hard to do at the beginning and yet, after discussing with my friends and tutors, I was able to understand well. The whole process is quite difficult and sometimes felt very tired of doing it. And yet, I didnt grouse about the heavy work load as I know it's part of the journey and a way of learning process in my university life.
